Sports photography is one of the few remaining pure forms of documentary photography. The moment happens and it is gone. It is either captured in the moment or it is lost forever. Unlike sports writers and television, still photographers don't have the luxury of instant replay. Great images capture not only the tremendous skills and abilities of the greatest athletes in action, but also the passions and emotions of those involved in the game. The most important part of being an excellent photographer is knowing the game and enjoyoing it.

Like they say about real estate, location is everything. As a parent or someone not able to sit sideline for the sport it's hard to get a great shot through the fence or over several different heads in front of you in the stands. A sports photographer can get close to the action and get into the rhythum of the game and feel the energy on the field to get those once in a life time shots.
